The excitement on a child’s face as they put on a team jersey for the first time makes all the carpooling, fundraising and weekends spent in rinks, pools or at the field worth it. But for many kids, the joy of organized team sports fades the closer they get to adolescence. Research suggests about one in three young athletes quits by the age of 14, with the number of girls exceeding that of boys. The same can’t be said for recreational sports.
