Fashion Week San Diego presented a runway show on Oct. 8 at the Andaz San Diego Hotel. Each of the local and global fashion designers showed a 10-piece collection. The director, Gwen Bates, welcomed the crowd.
A video presentation was shown about the founder of FWSD Allison Andrews. Dispersed in between the runway segments was a hilarious comedian act by Jason Stuart. During the evening they featured two students, Brianna and Nicolette, describing their experiences in Haute STEAM X this summer.
FWSD added a new topic by collaborating with the event sponsor Topo Chico. They called this new addition Topo Couture and it was an effort to support sustainability in fashion. The participating designers were Sierra Mitchell with the Cardboard Look, Needles and Spines showed the Plastic Look, Dorothea presented The Fringe Skirt and Jacket, and lastly, Nina Cicolo showed The Brazilian Bra and Skirt with heart-earrings.
This year The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted Molly Nguyen her wish to walk the runway. Nguyen suffers from a rare nervous condition. She was wearing Sierra Mitchell and came down the catwalk looking like a veteran model.
After the festivities concluded, Adam McDade popped out of the audience and asked the model Marlana Whittington to marry him. This was the big surprise of the night. Everyone was delighted when she said “yes.”
